The Rock and the River: the Beginning and End of the Civil Rights Movement (ages 11-17)
An interactive introduction to The Rock and the River, this presentation offers an overview of the Civil Rights Movement: the forces that led black Americans to unite in the struggle, and the challenges they faced along the way. The program incorporates guided discussion with students about themes explored in The Rock and the River, Readers' Theatre, and Q&A about Kekla's process for researching and writing the novel. Can be tailored to suit small groups, classroom groups and large audiences.  

Pontiac Readers' Theatre

Creative Writing Workshops (ages 7 to 17)
These fun and interactive workshops guide students in exploring the creative use of words. Kekla employs group and individual writing exercises, poetry and prose reading, exploration of ways that good writing skills are useful in personal and professional life, and Q&A about the writer's lifestyle. Workshop length and specific activities vary according to students' age and previous writing experience.

LEAP Reading Group

Additional Presentation Topics: 
* Nelson Mandela and the End of Apartheid
One of the most influential and well-respected leaders in world history, Nelson Mandela the man remains an enigma in many ways. This workshop explores the history of Apartheid South Africa, with special focus on Nelson Mandela's life and work toward ending the system and bringing peace and equality to his nation. Includes Q&A about Kekla's process for researching and writing the biography.

* The Salem Witch Trials Crisis: How and Why It Happened
How does a community rise up in panic against so many of its own? This presentation explores the history of the Salem Witch Trials, the social forces in place that led to the crisis, and how we still feel the effects of these historical events today. Includes Q&A about Kekla's process for researching and writing the book.

* Author Visits
Kekla is always happy to simply come discuss her books, her writing process and her historical research, and to answer any other questions her young readers may have. Can be done in person, or via Skype!
